The Sigmund Freud Museum was opened 50 years ago, in 1971, after having overcome internal and external resistance. The ‘talk & walk’ tour spans this difficult beginning in postwar Vienna and the different curatorial decisions and interventions which took place in the 1980s and 1990s to the recent redesign of the house between 2019 and 2020. It oscillates from psychoanalysis as a method of remembering to the memory work of a museum, from mnemic traces to constructional traces, focusing on events of the past as present-day forces and on the question how emptiness can be transformed into a meaningful absence.
